From Darkness to Light – Critical Appreciation
The short film From Darkness to Light, written by Dinesh Mehra and directed by Prashant Joshi, beautifully conveys a deep message about gratitude and awareness. It focuses on something we often overlook – the everyday privilege of having electricity and the deeper respect for things we take for granted.
The story revolves around a middle-class family, where the son is careless about switching off lights, fan, AC, etc. The father, without scolding, teaches him a valuable lesson by turning off the electricity in their home. At first, the son is confused and frustrated, but through this simple experience – especially a short interaction with the housemaid, Shantabai, who gets electricity for only a few hours a day – he begins to understand what it means to live without certain comforts.
One of the most powerful things about this short film is how it uses light and darkness as symbols. Darkness here isn’t just about no electricity—it stands for unawareness or ignorance. And the moment the lights come back, it isn’t just about power being restored. It’s symbolic of realization, growth, and respect.
Another thing that stood out was how there is no heavy dialogue or lecture. The father lets his son experience the discomfort rather than explaining it directly. That twist, where we find out the power cut was intentional, makes the message hit harder.
The film’s tone is soft. It gives viewers space to reflect rather than just teaching a lesson. That’s what makes it effective. The simplicity, relatability, and natural storytelling leave a strong impact.
This video made me think about how many times I leave things running without thinking. It reminded me that being aware and respectful of resources available to us is important—not just for us but for those who don’t even have the same access. The message that stayed with me is:
"Change doesn’t always need big actions—it starts with awareness and small individual steps."
